Africa Tariff War Escalates! China Supply Chain Launches “Light-weight Sorting 2.0”

Global Trade Frontline – July 8, 2025

Abuja/Lagos – Nigeria's tariff regime is tightening again. After hiking rice duty from 50 % to 60 % and wheat to 70 % in 2023-24, Abuja has now pushed baggage import tax from 25 % to 40 %, while Accra's new gram-based levy adds US$0.50 per piece for items >500 g. The combined squeeze has driven Chinese suppliers to roll out “Light-weight Sorting 2.0” within weeks.

Tech fixes in action
▪ Shandong Ruihua installed CO₂ laser cutters that strip surplus lining with millimetre precision, cutting 35 % of weight per bag.
▪ A patented nylon foldable tote (45 L open, 400 g folded) is now mass-produced to dodge the 500 g trigger.

Results: West-Africa container rejection rates fell from 47 % in Q1 to 11 % in Q2, and total landed cost is down 28 %, according to SGS-certified weight reports.

Market signal
Nigeria remains HMS’s key West-African hub. The firm says it will embed “light-weight sorting” innovation into its 2025 Nigeria partnership roadmap, eyeing shared laser-capacity centres to keep margins above tariff shockwaves.
